TRAINEE PROGRAMS
Our trainee programs allow new team members to begin their careers with Builders FirstSource in an environment that allows them to train and develop their skills before landing permanent full-time roles. We offer programs in a number of career areas including:
SALES IN TRAINING (SIT) PROGRAM
Get exposed to all areas of the sales process. You’ll learn about business operations, products and services, estimating, building a customer base, working leads, and collaborating with vendors. You will also shadow Outside Sales Representatives (OSRs) to learn first-hand the fine art of selling BFS products and building trusted relationships with customers. At each phase of the program, you will have a point of contact to ensure you progress and stay on track.
MANAGER IN TRAINING (MIT) PROGRAM
This is a wonderful career opportunity where you are exposed to different jobs in the company. As you move through MIT, you will gain understanding of the importance and interconnectedness of every role at BFS in providing industry-leading products and services. You will experience how we approach everything with a “people-first” mentality. At each phase of this program, you will have a point of contact to ensure you progress and stay on track.
DESIGNER IN TRAINING (DIT) PROGRAM
This is a great program if you’re looking to start a career in construction! At BFS, we design and manufacture trusses, creating precise angles and pitches that meet specific building codes. They are shipped from our facilities to jobsites for framers to install – helping homes across the country get built faster. As a Designer in Training, you’ll learn how to read construction plans and use 3D design software to create truss design and placement drawings. If you are a detail-oriented, creative problem-solver and enjoy seeing the results of your work in real life, we encourage you to apply!
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
College students seeking on-the-job experience will find plenty of opportunities at Builders FirstSource. Our internships are paid, short-term positions that last 12 weeks from May to August. Internships focus on building skills and experience with positions across our Field and Corporate teams. These are just a few areas you could find an internship role in:
- Operations
- Manufacturing
- Sales
- Supply Chain
- IT
- Construction Services (Design/Estimating)
WHAT OUR INTERNS HAVE TO SAY
“Builders FirstSource is a special place to work because of the family atmosphere. Everyone here is not just a coworker, but a friend and part of the family. This has made moving to a new area much easier as I feel like I have a group supporting me in any way I may need.”
– JoshuaOperations Management Intern
“I took a masters internal audit class and realized it interested me. BFS came to my internal audit class and I liked the way they interacted, so I decided to apply. I didn’t expect to go to a site to do an audit, so I got to learn how internal audit interacts with those at the locations. The atmosphere, everyone gets along and encourages each other.”
– KatieInternal Audit Intern
“What makes BFS a special place to work is the different sides of the business. At my location we have hardware, windows, doors, trim, loading, dispatch, and sales teams. The way they all work together allows you to see a macro business structure and allows for you to learn so many varying skills that, when put together, blend well.”
– TristanOperations Management Intern
“When I first met representatives from BFS at the career fair, I was immediately drawn to their warmth and openness. This gave me the impression that BFS values a supportive and welcoming workplace culture, which greatly appealed to me.
Additionally, during our conversation, I expressed my interest in finding an internship that could accommodate my combination of studies in Computer Science and Construction Management. I was thrilled to learn about the Environmental Health & Safety Internship at BFS, as it aligns perfectly with both my academic and career interests.”

“What makes BFS a special place to work is the relationships that are made here. Not only are the employees in both the yard and the office good friends, but everyone has a great relationship with the contractors that frequently purchase material from BFS. Everyone at BFS is very welcoming and friendly and is always willing help with whatever the task may be. I have never experienced this type of environment before, and this is one of the many reasons I have enjoyed my internship so far.”
– JohnOperations Management Intern
“I chose to intern at BFS because of the unique opportunity presented to study the intersection between corporate finance, information technology, and data analytics. I also was drawn to BFS’s strong market positioning, and I value the opportunity to gain broader insights into the corporate landscape across America.”
– AllenIT Financial Management & Financial Governance
“What makes BFS a special place to work is the overwhelming acceptance from all the team members. Not only has everyone taken the time to get to know me personally as the new guy, but they have also been very helpful and responsive in answering any questions that I have had about how the company operates.”
– JoshStrategic Business Operations
“Through working at BFS, I’ve learned to question why something works the way it does, especially with regards to the way a company processes information.”
– FletchIntern- General & Administrative
“I wanted to intern at BFS to get a greater understanding of construction and hopefully be a part of it as a salesperson or in a manager position.”
– PaulinaIntern-Sales (Millwork)
“I've learned how the whole business works from start to finish. I thought I was just going to be more one-on-one with the operation manager but I learned everything. Now being with the operation manager, I actually understand the process, the problems, and the language used.”
– VivianaOperation Management/ Design
“I choose BFS because they gave me the best opportunity to learn about an amazing industry and about my major. BFS has been a company that I have dealt with as a customer before, and they are always friendly and welcoming to others. When BFS gave me the opportunity to join them it was a clear choice to make.”
– AidanBusiness Operations intern
“Throughout my internship experience, I did not expect to learn that the groundwork of the industry’s processes aligns very closely with my logistics studies in school. This knowledge is useful when making conscious decisions to help account for all levels of industry processes.”
